Top 10 Christmas movies

Christmas movies are one of the things I look forward to the most around the holidays. I have always loved the specials that come on during December to celebrate the season & my brother and I used to have our favorites that we’d watch for every year on CBC. His was Charlie Brown’s Christmas and mine was Mickey’s Christmas Carol. My mom’s favorite was The Grinch and I used to love when that one would come on the most because we would all watch together. We liked the horribly animated Rudolph with the elf who dreamt of being a dentist, Frosty the Snowman and all the other 80’s era Christmas movies of our childhood. Holidays are full of traditions like this and I still get excited to set the PVR to record all my favorites and watch them throughout the month.

I’ll admit that I watch many of the Hallmark Christmas movies that play at nauseum over the holidays too. They’re all the same level of cheesy but they’re also full of Christmas spirit & I love that there is one on pretty much anytime, night or day. My favorite classic is It’s a Wonderful Life which is funny because I only watched it for the first time a few years ago. Every year it would be on, but I could never bring myself to invest the time in it for some reason. I think being so old and in black and white I just couldn’t see the interest people had in it. One year I forced myself to stick it out and now it’s absolutely one of my all-time favorites!

With so many Christmas traditions, movies and television specials are a very small thing that helps to get me into the spirit of the season. I love to share the specials of my childhood with my daughter and for the most part, she seems to like them too. We went to watch the new Grinch movie the other day in theatre and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. A lot of the time the newer versions of classic movies are disappointing, but this was a pretty good one. It was nice to see the movie in newer animation but still in animation and the story is basically the same…although I felt the Grinch was a bit nicer overall in this one. Probably not a bad thing!

I put together a list of my top 10 favorite Christmas movies below. They are in no particular order, but they are the best of the best in my opinion. Did your favorite(s) make the cut?

  1. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
  2. The Holiday
  3. The Santa Clause
  4. Christmas with the Kranks
  5. It’s a Wonderful Life (original version)
  6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original cartoon version)
  7. Elf
  8. The Family Man
  9. Home Alone
  10. Love Actually

Well there it is! That was actually kinda hard for me to do! I love so many of them. I could definitely keep going but I’d probably just end up naming all of them and that kind of misses the point of this blog.

Hope that you are all enjoying whatever Christmas movies you love to watch. I hear we just might be in for a white Christmas this year, so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for that for sure!

Merry Christmas and much love,

Christina xo
